Promising New South Wales quick Josh Hazlewood has been called into Australia’s limited overs side for their tour of England in place of the injured Mitchell Johnson.

Johnson has experienced a flair-up of an elbow infection he first complained of during the Twenty20 World Cup in the Caribbean.

Australia team physio Alex Kountouris says Johnson requires “specialist medical management” and as such will need to stay home in order to be fit for the Test series against Pakistan that follows five one day internationals against England.

Hazlewood, who has long been earmarked as a future international player, played a starring role in Australia’s successful Under 19 World Cup campaign in January.

There are numerous theories as to how Johnson’s problem arose, varying from boxing drills to the addition of a tattoo.

“Mitchell had an infected right elbow during the ICC Twenty20 World Cup,” said Kountouris.

“Since returning to Australia he has had a flare-up of the condition and is currently being treated for it.

“As part of the treatment he requires specialist medical management over the coming weeks and as such he’s been ruled out of the six ODIs against Ireland and England.
